As sockeye, coho and chinook smolts begin their seaward migration, so do the TCG Fisheries Technicians. April 15th and 16th, Raina, Shenoa, Jared, Drew, Kyle and Harlin all flew into the Lower Stikine camp along with Department of Fisheries & Oceans (DFO) staff in preparation for annual smolt tagging. Unlike smolts, this crew faced terrestrial hardship, including camp under a foot of snow, broken heaters, frozen waterlines, a flipped dock, nonfunctioning picker crane and worst of all, one bottle of China Lily to share amongst them. All that said, nothing can keep the crew down. They’re digging out camp and preparing for more crew coming to join them next week.

We also have a Swiftwater Motorized Boat Operators – Field Services course happening soon with members of the Wildlife Department and DFO joining our crew for a couple of fun days training on the Stikine River.

Soon enough the smolt migration and our technicians will cross paths, fish will be tagged and on their way to the ocean.
